Student Calculator relaunched to help students budget

As competition for university places and jobs increases, it’s harder than ever for students to make the right choices about their future.

But, thanks to the relaunch of the UNIAID Student Calculator, students should at least avoid any nasty surprises when it comes to budgeting for higher education.

The updated online calculator helps students plan their finances and get tips about money management. It enables students to build a lifestyle budget, looking at their time as well as money, so they can learn how to keep their finances, social lives, employment and studies in balance. The interactive budget planner is easy to use and by using it, students can:

  • Access top tips and sample costs across a range of lifestyle areas, from socialising to eating, so students can get a better idea of what they’ll need to budget for and how it adds up over a week, month and year.
  • Calculate their statutory support and learn about different sources of income
  • Build a lifestyle budget by week, month and year
  • Understand the demands the course will have on their time as well as their money
  • Save their budget so they can use it before and during their course of study
  • View budgets of case studies and read top tips from students

The tool was first launched in 2006 and built in partnership with the National Union of Students (NUS) and the financial advice team from the University of Teesside. It formed the basis for a number of joint projects developed by BrightsideUNIAID and partners, including the KCLSU Student Calculator and the Birmingham City University Student Calculator.
